Policies and Standards for Comments

1) Registration with Real Names: All Members must register with real names, but can include a different “screen name” to appear on published comments. Registered Members can change screen name and password.

2) Anonymous Comments: Anonymity is allowed, but we encourage writers to identify themselves. Members can be held liable for their Comments. Court rulings can require that identities be divulged, and law enforcement can seek information deemed important to criminal investigations. The News-Register generally will try to protect anonymity as desired by a Member, but we do not guarantee that protection. It is a violation to post comments that identify other Members who wish to remain anonymous.

3) Prohibited Language: Members may encounter viewpoints that they find objectionable. We caution Members against posting abusive, disruptive, rude, inflammatory or otherwise inappropriate messages or replies, including racial, ethnic or religious slurs; offensive epithets; sexually explicit comments; defamatory or libelous statements; or exhortations to violence or other illegal acts. We caution against personal attacks, threats or ridicule, and hate speech in any form will not be tolerated.

4) Ongoing Agendas and Arguments: As a general rule, Members should not use Comments as an ongoing platform to espouse their political, religious, social or philosophical views, to disparage the ideas of others, or to engage other Members in extended debates on such agendas. There is not an absolute standard for this provision, and participants will be warned if the News-Register sees these behaviors.

5) Complaints: The News-Register does not screen Comments in advance. If you have a complaint about another person’s conduct, please e-mail it to sbagwell@newsregister.com.

6) Copyright: Members are asked to refrain from posting any information, images, trademarks or copyrighted material without permission.

7) Advertising: Comments should not promote or bash commercial products or services, or to promote links to commercial websites in order to advertise products and/or services.

8) Personal Information: For the safety and security of our online community, NewsRegister.com recommends against the sharing of personal information such as telephone numbers and addresses.

9) Use of Comments: Members gree that NewsRegister.com may modify, retransmit or delete any Comment at its discretion, and that Comments or portions of Comments can be reprinted by the News-Register Publishing Co.

10) Liability: Members acknowledge that NewsRegister.com cannot accept liability for comments placed by other Members. Under no circumstances will NewsRegister.com accept liability for lost profits, lost data or any type of damages, be they compensatory, special, incidental, indirect, consequential or punitive, claimed as a result of comments posted by Members.

11) Member Privileges: NewsRegister.com reserves the right to revoke Member privileges for any reason deemed appropriate by the News-Register Publishing Co.
