Wiles heading to the circuit court bench

May 20, 2014

Yamhill County Deputy District Attorney Ladd Wiles built a commanding 2-1 lead over McMinnville defense lawyer Mark Lawrence for Position 4 on the Yamhill County Circuit Court bench, coasting in to a 65-35 percent win.

Complete but still unofficial returns put Wiles at 10,163 votes or 65.3 percent to Lawrence's 5,407 or 34.7 percent. He will succeed Cal Tichenor, who is facing mandatory retirement at the end of the year.

He was endorsed by the Yamhill County Bar Association and all three Yamhill Valley newspapers — the McMinnville News-Register, Newberg Graphic and Sheridan Sun.

After passing the Oregon bar exam, Wiles entered private practice in Coos Bay, then joined the Coos County District Attorney’s Office a year later.

After three years, he left to take a job on the legal staff of Mericom Corp., a wireless consulting firm in Wilsonville. Missing courtroom work, he became a deputy district attorney in Polk, then in Yamhill County.

During his campaign run, Wiles pointed to his experience in the areas of child support enforcement, juvenile cases, post-conviction release and civil cases, in addition to a period of time in which he was in private practice.

He will join Presiding Judge John Collins, Cynthia Easterday and Ronald Stone on the bench. Collins and Easterday are former prosecutors as well, while Stone's backround is in private practice.
