Sheriff Crabtree won't seek re-election

Sheriff makes intentions clear day before candidate filing opens

Sheriff Jack Crabtree

Yamhill County Sheriff Jack Crabtree announced this afternoon that he will not seek re-election, leaving the sheriff position wide open for the first time in 12 years.

Crabtree said he notified his staff on the eve of opening day for filing for running in the May primary elections with the Yamhill County Clerk's office. He said he wanted them to know before word spread.

He also said he felt he needed to make his intentions clear to those who might consider running for the position. He said that it wouldn't be fair to those wanting to run, or those wanting time to get to know their candidates if he'd waited to make his announcement.

"I can think of no higher honor than to know you have entrusted this high office to me for so many years," said Crabtree in a press release issued this afternoon

Let's hope we get someone who supports our right to keep and bear arms.

That's a pretty low bar. Every sheriff in America is sworn to uphold the Constitution, and the 2nd Amendment is part of it.
I've never heard of a sheriff's candidate anywhere, let alone one actually elected to the office, who doesn't support the 2nd Amendment.
I hope that's not the only qualification that matters to you. Personally, I'm looking for a lot more, including command presence, substantial law enforcement experience, budget and finance expertise, leadership skills, interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with other agencies.
I think Jack has set the bar pretty high, and I'm hoping we get someone who can keep it there. I care a lot less about how high he ranks on the pro-gun fever line than I do lots of other things, particularly his managerial skills.
Let's elect the best man for the job and leave the gun debate out of it. That's settled constitutional law and seems destined to stay that way.
