Hagg Lake-area fire 20 percent contained

Hagg Lake park is closed and numerous homes have been evacuated because of the Scoggins Creek blaze, which is burning more than 300 acres about 2 miles northwest of the lake. Firefighters say the blaze is 20 percent contained and that they hope to make more headway today.

The Scoggins Creek blaze started Friday afternoon. The cause has not yet been determined.

Gov. John Kitzhaber declared it a conflagration Saturday, allowing the state fire marshal to mobilize firefighters and equipment to assist local resources battling the fire

Firefighters from Gaston, the state Forestry Department and several other agencies fought the fire Friday and Saturday, continuing their efforts overnight with aerial water supplies, bulldozers and other equipment. Stimson Lumber, the Washington County Sheriff's Office and other organizations also are assisting.

Nearly 600 firefighters are working in the steep and rugged terrain, according to the state Fire Marshal's office. Many are digging fire lines by hand.

Sixty homes along Stepien Road, Sain Creek Road and Scoggins Valley Road have been evacuated, while dozens more have been alerted to be ready to evacuate at any time.

Call the fire information line, at 503-357-2191, for the latest updates.
