PORTLAND — Oregon University System Chancellor Melody Rose said Monday she's leaving the soon-to-be-defunct office to become president of Marylhurst University.
Rose has been chancellor since March 2013. She moves on at a time when the power in Oregon higher education is shifting to the Higher Education Coordinating Commission and governing boards at each of the state's seven public universities.
Boards at the University of Oregon, Oregon State University and Portland State University assume authority on July 1 while boards at the four regional and technical universities do so on July 1, 2015. Once the transition is complete, the chancellor's office and the state Board of Higher Education will cease to exist.
Before joining the university system, Rose was a political science professor at Portland State and then its vice provost for academic programs.
She will take over at Marylhurst — a private, liberal arts university near Portland — in mid-August. The university was founded in 1893, and Rose will be its 15th president.
“The history and mission of Marylhurst are an inspiration to me personally, and I look forward to working with the faculty, staff and board to serve our students and advance the vision and values of Marylhurst,” Rose said in a statement.
The Marylhurst board appointed a presidential search committee last summer after Judith Johansen stepped down.
The Board of Higher Education plans to appoint interim leadership for the chancellor's office. The office will work with the board as it governs the four regional and technical universities for one final year and help in the search for a new president at Western Oregon University. The current president, Mark Weiss, plans to retire in 2015.
