Far cuter than turkeys

Pets up for adoption on display in downtown tasting room

Mammals, not birds, are the best part of this year's Turkey Rama celebration, at least for me.

Sure, it's hard to resist the good ol' gobblers, but when kittens and puppies are on the scene, they'll win, every time.

Don't believe me? Then answer this question: How many minutes have you spent watching cute turkey videos on the Internet.

The Turkey Rama kittens and puppies aren't on videotape; they're big (well, small) as life in the window of Willamette Valley Vineyards Wine Center at Third and Cowls streets. And, which you can watch their antics as much as you like between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., you also can touch them and play with them.

Homeward Bound Pets is borrowing the tasting room's window during Turkey Rama to show off adoptable pets. The hope is that at least some of the animals will find permanent homes before the event ends Saturday. The others will go back to the shelter at 10605 S.E. Loop Road, where they'll be available for viewing Mondays through Saturdays.

On Friday, dozens of people of all ages lined up to look into the window, and many came inside to pet and scratch and cuddle the little animals.

The mixed-breed kittens and poodle-dachsund mix puppies didn't do anything out of the ordinary. Snickers and Babe Ruth and Sammi and the others just went about their business, playing with anything that moved, running and rolling, and generally looking adorable. They made people laugh and calmed frayed nerves -- both important functions they'll be glad to continue in their forever homes.

New owners claimed several of the pets on Friday, but many will still be available Saturday. They're worth a look -- but be warned, you may not be able to resist taking one home.
