Not only will admission be free to all Yamhill County veterans that day, but county officials are also planning an evening event to demonstrate support and gratitude, said Commissioner Kathy George, liaison to the county’s Veterans Services Office.
“We want all of our veterans, their families, and anyone else who wants to come and honor those who served them to be there Friday,” George said. “We want them to let them know we will watch out for their families when they are deployed. We are here for veterans and their families when they need us.
“Our veterans and their families sacrifice a great deal to ensure the freedom of our citizens. They have our backs by taking care of us and keeping our country free and we need to have their backs. We can show them we appreciate them and value their sacrifices by showing up and signing the banner.”
While dignitaries representing each of Yamhill County’s 10 cities will sign a covenant pledging local support for veterans, a much larger banner will be made available for citizen signatures. George said the banner could become “a traveling symbol of support,” offered for display in government buildings around the county on a rotating basis.
Yamhill is the first Oregon county to host such an event, according to Veterans Services Officer Jerry Wilson. “I think Yamhill County is one of the leading counties for actual resources available to veterans, whether through faith groups or different organizations trying to make resources available.”
Paul Partridge, the county’s Health and Human Services manager, said the event will be “Yamhill-centric.” He said Sheriff Jack Crabtree would serve as master of ceremonies.
To qualify for free admission, veterans are asked to pick up vouchers from the county’s veterans office, commissioners office, sheriff’s office or records desk, or McMinnville’s state employment office, Work Source Center, Veterans of Foreign Wars post or American Legion Hall.
