(News-Register staff) Stephanie Legard, principal of Sue Buel Elementary School in McMinnville, has been named Oregon Elementary Principal of the Year.
It's the second statewide honor for a McMinnville School District staff member in the past week. Cindi Hiatt Henry, food service director, was named the top nutrition program director in the state.
Both women will be recognized Monday night at a school board meeting. The public session will start at 7:30 p.m. in the district office, 1500 N.E. Baker St.
McMinnville Superintendent Maryalice Russell was notified of Legard's honor this afternoon. She quickly arranged a surprise announcement attended by district administrators, board members, Legard's family and Sue Buel staff.
Legard said she was surprised and humbled by the honor. While she didn't want recognition for herself, she said, she was pleased to have a light shined on the good things her school is doing,
Staff members, in turn, couldn't say enough good things about Legard. "She wants nothing but the best for the kids," said Kim Mansfield, and other Sue Buel staff members agreed.
Legard will be honored at a statewide gathering this spring and a national event in Washington, D.C., later in the year.
