Minor flooding reported in Eastern Oregon

Mar 11, 2014

By The Associated Press

PENDLETON — Heavy rains caused minor flooding Monday in Eastern Oregon, with water topping the banks of the Umatilla, Grande Ronde and John Day rivers.

The high water got a foot or two above flood stage, and streamed over roads and fields where the waters escaped the riverbanks.

The Umatilla crested Monday afternoon and is expected to be below flood stage Tuesday, the East Oregonian reported.

The Grande Ronde and John Day are expected to fall more slowly over the next few days as dry weather sets in.

“It will be quick and gone, from the way it looks,” said Umatilla County Emergency Manager Jack Remillard.

The city of Pendleton distributed sand and sandbags in the low-lying Riverside area.

“It wasn't anything we couldn't handle with sandbags,” said Lewis Webb, part owner of a mobile home park there.

The National Weather Service said some mountain stations reported up to 2 inches of precipitation in the 72 hours leading up to the flooding.

Along the Umatilla at Echo, large chunks of debris were signs of bank erosion.

Rangers from the Walla Walla District of the U.S. Forest Service were turned away when water flowed over a road into the North Fork Umatilla Wilderness. The road was washed out a year ago. Road Manager Lonnie Ruchert said this year's flood will test the repairs, which rangers are interested in inspecting.

“We'll wait until everything is safe and the water is back down,” Ruchert said.
