Local horse wins world championship

A quarterhorse bred in Yamhill won the world championship in amateur reining Sunday, Nov 4, at the American Quarter Horse Association world championships in Oklahoma City.

The horse, an 8-year-old bay gelding named Northwest Whiz, was bred by Tom and Molly St. Hilaire. It was shown by its owner, Courtney Boesch of Porterville, Calif.

In the amateur reining class, 63 horses competed for world champion. The honor comes with a purse of $28,000, 100 pounds of Nutrena feed and a prize package that includes a gold trophy, medallion and neck wreath, Montana Silversmiths buckle, Cripple Creek Outerwear logo jacket and WeatherBeeta embroidered blanket, all custom designed.
