In defeat, George Fox football begins anew

NEWBERG -- A vocal crowd of 3,659 turned out to watch George Fox University play its first football game in 46 seasons Saturday afternoon, as NAIA school Arizona Christian came to Stoffer Family Stadium.

It wasn't merely enough to break in the artificial turf of Lemmons Family Field, however. The Bruins wanted a victory.

And nearly succeeded.

Instead, a 10-point third quarter and 173 yards on the ground allowed the Firestorm to escape Newberg with a 30-27 victory over the Bruins. The win was the first in the history of Arizona Christian (1-2), which also began playing football this season.

George Fox quarterback Grant Schroeder scored the first points of the Bruins' resurrection with a 16-yard touchdown run on his team's opening drive, started on an interception by cornerback Adrian Bonner. Schroeder finished with 301 yards passing (20-for-37), two passing touchdowns and an interception.

Bruins running back John Shaffer, a transfer from Linfield, carried the ball 23 times for 86 yards.

George Fox (0-1) hosts the University of LaVerne on Sept. 13.

Amity 22, Salem Academy 12

SALEM -- As both teams struggled to get their offenses going, Salem Academy gave visiting Amity a leg up with four turnovers and two snaps out of the end zone for safeties.

Once the Warriors found their rhythm, the Crusaders were too far behind.

Tyler Berrier and T.R. McShane each had a receiving touchdown and Isaac Nance scored a 9-yard rushing touchdown to cap a Class 3A nonleague victory at Salem Academy High School Saturday night.

The Warriors (1-0) host Reedsport in Amity on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.
