Citizens honored for their service
May 13, 2014
Ken Rogers and Consuelo Christianson were honored Monday night, May 12, as the man and woman of the year at the 59th annual Distinguished Service Awards banquet.
Past winners presented the awards before a crowd of community members gathered in the McMinnville Grand Ballroom.
Rogers is a longtime educator who joined the McMinnville School District after graduating from Linfield College. The World War II veteran also was active with the Boy Scouts for 56 years.
Christianson, also a veteran, works with the Yamhill Interagency Narcotics Team and Linfield College’s international programs office. She is active with the Chamber of Commerce, Soroptimist International of McMinnville and women’s and veterans’ issues.
Also honored were Karin Mosier, outstanding junior citizen, an attorney who is active with the McMinnville Downtown Association and McMinnville Kiwanis Club; Dave Larson, outstanding educator, who teaches science, technology, engineering and math programs at Patton and Duniway middle schools; and Aren Hinely, outstanding farmer, who started and runs Yamhill River Farms with his family.
A citizen committee organized the DSA event, with input from past winners.
Until last year, the McMinnville Jaycees had sponsored the program since its launching in the 1950s. When the club was unable to continue, a group of former women of the year winners stepped up to take over.
