Body found at Riverbend Landfill identified as Salem woman
Apr 25, 2014
A body found about 1 p.m. Thursday at the Riverbend Landfill has been identified as a 55-year-old Salem woman, according to Salem police.
She was identified through fingerprints, Capt. Tim Svenson of the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office said. Salem police identified her as Solveg Birgitte Pedersen Cox. She resided in the 1200 block of Wallace Road NW.
Her body was transported to the state Medical Examiner's Office in Clackamas where an autopsy was performed Friday by Dr. Clifford Nelson to determine the cause, manner and approximate time of death. The findings have not been released.
“Salem police has executed a search warrant on her residence, but I don't know what was found,” Svenson said.
The Salem Major Crimes Team responded to the landfill following discovery of the body.
Svenson said the preliminary investigation determined that the body was transported by a garbage truck that services an apartment complex, where the victim lived, to the landfill.
“We were looking at two possible trucks, one from Canby and one from Salem,” Svenson said. “Based on the location where this truck dumped its trash, we were able to narrow it down to the West Salem truck.”
Immediately after the truck dumped its load, a diesel Caterpillar began pushing the pile outward in different directions, according to Svenson. As the load was being spread out, the operator saw what he believed to be a mannequin roll off the side of the blade.
“He saw that movement, walked over to it and realized it was a body and not a mannequin,” Svenson said.
The investigation is on-going. Anyone with information is asked to call Salem police at 503-540-2353.
