Artist Nils Lou, a longtime art professor at Linfield College, died on Wednesday, college officials said.

"Nils was a great artist and an inspirational teacher," said John McKeegan in an e-mail to Linfield colleagues.

Lou, who would have been 82 on Jan. 5, had been associated with Linfield since 1987. He created many paintings and ceramic pieces on campus, including the large sundial on Murdock Hall.

Lou was internationally known for his art and his techniques, including the outdoor firings in wood-fired, earthen kiln he build at his home near Willamina.

He built his East Creek Anagama Kiln in 1985, following is an 8th century design. It has been fired more than 100 times. A firing consists of a crew of potters, students, friends and family, feeding the kiln wood every few minutes for four days straight; six cords of wood are burned in one firing.

In a December 2011 News-Register story, Nils talked about his philosophy of pursing art. "Don't try to see where you want (the art piece) to go, but allow the process to take you on this magical journey," he said. "If you trust the process, you will never have writer's block, or painter's block."

I spoke to him several weeks ago. He had just purchased a lot across from Michelbook Country Club and was cutting down trees getting ready to build a new home. How sad!!!! He had also been the golf coach at Linfield in years past.

He will be missed by those of us who often golfed with him.
