There was 12 lead changes through three quarters Saturday night as the No. 6 Amity Warriors and No. 11 Bandon Tigers battled in the first round of the 3A boys basketball playoffs.

Amity (24-4), with the home crowd cheering them on, led by four points going into the final quarter and never relinquished the lead, pulling out a 57-47 victory to qualify for next week’s state tournament in Coos Bay.

Senior Zach Wilson led the Warriors with 19 points, Lance Nelson had 15, Brett Hilt scored 11 and Billy Hale added nine. Derek Ojua scored Amity’s three other points, and had to battle Bandon’s 6-foot 7-inch center (giving up six inches in the matchup) Evan Henson all night.

Amity was up 42-39 with four minutes left when Ojua hit Nelson on a back cut who hit a running bank shot, was fouled by Henson and completed the 3-point play.

Hale hit two free throws, and then Amity forced a turnover on the other end. After a Bandon timeout, on the inbounds under the Tigers’ basket, Nelson got a full-court pass over-the-top and threw down a slam dunk to put his team up 49-40.

Amity hit eight of 10 free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

In other West Valley League action Saturday, Dayton lost at Blanchet Catholic, 59-53, and Horizon Christian lost to Harrisburg, 51-39.

Amity will play No. 3 ranked Portland Adventist Academy Thursday in the state semifinal game at 6:30 p.m. at Marshfield High School in Coos Bay. The Cougars (22-4) finished tied for third in the Lewis & Clark League

Portland Adventist beat Amity on the road earlier this year on Dec. 30, 61-51.
