Alleged car thief snared after chase

News-Register Staff

Capt. Matt Scales of the McMinnville police identified him as Miguel Angel Rosales-Hernandez, 20, of 112 N.W. Ford St.

Rosales was charged with one count each of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and attempt to elude. He was lodged in the Yamhill County Jail on $20,000 bail.

Scales said Kevin G. Shawn, 55, of 715 N.W. Ford St., left his 2008 Toyota Prius running about 4:15 p.m. to warm it up.

“He had the key fob in hand, and the suspect got in and drove off,” Scales said. “While he was reporting the car stolen, it drove by his residence. Officers just happened to be behind the vehicle as he was reporting it stolen.”

The vehicle stopped momentarily at Northeast Third and Johnson streets, then sped off southbound across the Three Mile Lane Bridge.

From there, the chase moved to Highway 18, the Lafayette Highway and eventually Hopewell Road, reaching speeds of 100 mph at times.
