Melissa Davaz of Livingston, Mont., who was mid-way through her senior year at Linfield College when she allegedly planted fake bombs at points around campus in early December, is scheduled to enter a plea and undergo sentencing at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, in Yamhill County Circuit Court.
Davaz has been charged with five counts each of disorderly conduct and possession of a hoax destructive device, both Class A misdemeanors. Her court-appointed attorney, Elana Flynn of Sheridan, said Thursday that the two sides were close enough to having all the details in place that it was safe to set a date.
A 22-year-old anthropology major at the time, Davaz told police she had been drinking when she read a campus newspaper account of a suspicious object found on campus in late November. It drew the Oregon State Police Bomb Squad to the scene, but turned out to consist of nothing more than a plastic milk jug filled with concrete.
That gave her the idea of placing wrapped but unmarked packages in various locations around campus, she told police. However, that drew far more police attention and media publicity than she anticipated, and she subsequently decided to turn herself in.
Linfield responded by evicting her from college housing and barring her from campus. She is now living in Amity, according to the Oregon Judicial Information Network.
The packages, consisting of cardboard boxes wrapped in tape, had been placed in the Oak Grove, library, dining hall, football stadium and other high-traffic locations. Campus Public Safety quickly discovered one of them and notified McMinnville police.
More turned up, and the bomb squad was called in. The McMinnville Fire Department also sent personnel.
The campus was closed to both foot and vehicle traffic pending a bomb squad examination. Linfield kept members of the staff, faculty and student body apprised by phone and e-mail.

This is a tragic story. People who ruin their own lives just by poopy-headedness make me very sad.
I hope she's young enough to put her life back together.

Glad I'm not her Daddy footing the bill for her education!
Hey Linfield...goes to show you can educate an idiot and you still have an educated idiot :^)
I didn't go to Linfield; couldn't afford it. It was U.O.C. for me, "University of Chemeketa."
But I'm smart enough to know that if I pulled a dumb, drunk stunt and the cops and media showed up I would keep my mouth shut and stay in school.
