Amity dominated the 3A football landscape all season, so it stands to reason the Warriors would do much the same when the 3A All-State Team was announced. So it likely comes as little surprise that Amity swept the state’s superlative honors, with Cody Porter taking Offensive Player of the Year, Chad Chitwood claiming Defensive Player of the Year and Joel Magill landing Coach of the Year.
Eleven slots on the team belonged to Amity players, also, while Willamina, Sheridan and Dayton were also represented.
“You never know with voting how people are going to view your team,” Magill said. “So I was happy to see we had as many guys make it as we did. I was kind of shocked how many we had on the offense, though. I really kind of figured we’d have more on the defensive side than the offensive side. But it was really nice to see the offensive and defensive players of the year. I feel like Cody and Chad both really deserved that.”
And, while he’s certainly proud to see his name on top of the list as well, Magill is quick to deflect that praise.
“I think a lot of coaches maybe did a better job than I did,” he said. “I mean, we were loaded with exceptional talent this year. But it seems like whoever wins state will get that, I guess. And, don’t get me wrong, it’s great to get it. But I do think they should change it to a staff award. They act like there’s one guy out there doing it all with the kids, and that’s not true. It should saw Coaching Staff of the Year to Amity rather than just having my name on there.”
Amity, which took all five first team spots on the All-West Valley League team’s offensive line, got two on the All-State list, seniors Jake Stepisnik and Bryan DiSabatino. Chitwood and Scott Rathburn, also seniors, made the second team. Josh Kenner, too, was the first team tight end.
Cristian Cabrera was one of four first team running backs while senior Bobby Hatch was, along with Rainier’s Riley Tripp, a first team quarterback.
On defense, Rathburn was a first team pick on the defensive line, while DiSabatino made it onto the DL’s second team. Junior teammate Taylor Murders received honorable mention. Hatch, who finished with a double-digit interception total a year ago, effectively shut down his half of the field and was recognized also as a first team DB. Teammate Jeremy Boyd also was a first team selection in the secondary.
Willamina was represented by JJ Flynn, a second team wide receiver, and BJ Wilson, a first team linebacker. Patrick Mitchell of Sheridan also earned a second-team nod at wideout and honorable mention as a defensive back. Dayton’s Joey Flores took home an honorable mention at running back while sophomore teammate Hayden Craig finished as a second team punter.
