NEWBERG — A Dayton man sustained minor injuries Wednesday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Portland woman north of Newberg on Highway 99W at Bell Road.
Washington County sheriff's deputies identified the woman as Grace C. Throckmorton, 23. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Michael D. Backman, 27, of Dayton, was transported by ambulance to Providence Newberg Medical Center.
Deputies gave this account of the 4:15 crash:
Throckmorton was driving a 1999 Honda Accord east on Bell Road and had stopped at Highway 99W. She was trying to cross the highway in an attempt to reach the northbound lanes when she pulled into the path of a southbound 1999 Jeep Cherokee driven by Backman. His vehicle impacted the driver side door of Throckmorton's vehicle. There were no passengers in either vehicle.
Both vehicles spun and came to rest on the guardrail closest to the center median. Throckmorton was wearing a seat belt. Deputies did not report if Backman was wearing a seat belt.
The Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team (CART) responded to the scene to investigate the crash. The Oregon State Police assisted. The southbound lanes of Highway 99W were closed for several hours while investigation took place and the scene was cleared.
No citations were issued and no charges are expected to be filed, according to investigators.
