DAYTON — It took a little bit for the Dayton soccer team to get going on Monday night.

“I was surprised because we made it hard on ourselves,” Dayton coach Jose Cruz said. “The first 20 minutes of the first half was something that we don’t want to see. As a head coach, you see they were lazy or out of touch.”

But once they ball started rolling their way, there was absolutely no stopping the Pirates, who dished out an 11-0 whooping of the visiting Colton Vikings.

“Everybody started to do what they were supposed to be doing. I think that was the key,” Cruz said.

The first goal of the evening went to Rafael Gutierrez. A Pirate lobbed the ball into the goal. The Colton goalie jumped to grab it, but it tipped off her fingertips and she fell to the grass. The ball then went right to an open Gutierrez, who easily knocked it in for the first score.

It would be a little big longer before the Pirates would score another goal. Their offense continued putting pressure on the Colton defense. The Dayton defense didn’t have to do much the first half.

“That one goal helped a little bit, but not enough because we continued not doing well,” Cruz said. “But when the second goal came, we started to find the way to penetrate ... and that made a difference.”

The second goal came from Chris Rupp. He sliced through the Colton defense, kicking a high shot into the corner of the net. And it was after that second goal that the flood gates really opened.

Gutierrez added in another scored, Jesus Cruz two and Alvaro Magana one of his own all before half time, making it a 6-0 lead at the break.

The second half picked up right where the first half left off. Jesus Cruz netted three goals in a row at the beginning of the second period. Isauro Ramirez took one the house just a few seconds before Jesus Cruz put in the final goal of the game.

The win put the Pirates at 5-3 on the season, 2-0 in league play. They played Delphian on Tuesday evening. Then the Pirates are off for 10 days before they hit the field again with a home game against East Linn on Friday, Oct. 16.
