DAYTON — The 2009 Dayton Harvest Festival will feature a free corn feed and hot dog meal, in addition to numerous activities for all ages on Saturday, Sept. 12.
“It’s a way of celebrating Dayton’s agricultural heritage and just bringing everyone together,” said Beth Wytoski, a member of the Dayton City Council.
The celebration will run all day, with most activities in or near Courthouse Square park. The grand parade will move down Ferry Street from the high school at 11:30 a.m., circle the park and return to the school via Church Street.
Special guests in the parade will be the first Dayton Harvest Festival Court. King and queen Swede Lien and Orva Gubser and prince and princess Bill Kotch and Rosie Morgan will be crowned at 9:30 a.m. in the park, then ride on a special float in the parade.
Willamette Valley Roadrunners will kick things off at 8:30 a.m. with the sixth annual Dayton Fiesta Run, starting at the park. Both 10-kilometer and 5K versions will be offered, plus a one-mile kids’ run and a 5K walk.
Vendor booths will open at 10 a.m. in the park and remain open throughout the day. Live entertainment in the park will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
For kids, a fun zone will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a coloring contest, face-painting, a bounce house and a puzzle palace.
Twinkle Toes the Clown will be making balloon animals and other fun from 1 to 4 p.m. in the park.
A bicycle rodeo will start at 1 p.m. the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office and Don Hampton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10626 will host the event at Fourth and Main streets.
A wine and beer garden will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. behind Seufert Winery.
Two special displays will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• A Car and Farm Equipment Show, with classic cars, hot rods, tractors and military equipment, near the park.
• A quilt show hosted by Dayton Blockhouse Quilters in the city hall annex, 408 Ferry St.
Another special show, this one featuring local talent, will run from 1 to 6 p.m. in the park. Local singers and other entertainers will compete for top prizes of $100 in the youth category and $150 in the adult category.
Hot rod drivers will compete, as well, in time trials running from 1 to 4 p.m. on Ninth Street.
Master gardeners will be on hand to answer questions from noon to 2 p.m.
The free corn feed and hot dog meal will run from 6 to 8 p.m. in the park. Dayton’s mayor and city council will serve the food.
A teen dance will cap things off from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at Fourth and Main. Admission is $5 per person.
