The Yamhill County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted Tuesday to accept an $87.2 million budget for the 2009-2010 fiscal year, which starts today.
In May, the Yamhill County Budget Committee had approved an $84.3 million budget, but in the interim the county has found some unexpected money - $2.9 million.
"We are anticipating some grants that we weren't anticipating in May," Board Chair Leslie Lewis said.
A large portion of that is a $1.2 million federal capital construction grant for renovations planned at the courthouse.
In addition, some departments discovered they had more money than they previously had realized. For example, Health and Human Services Director Chris Johnson told the board at its June 24 budget discussion that his department could hire more employees than anticipated because the budget projections had overestimated needed cuts.
The Yamhill County Planning Department, on the other hand, will see a smaller budget this year, Lewis said. "Their budget is down this year because just the whole building industry is down."
The Community Corrections Department has also seen constant budget cuts during 2009.
They've totaled nearly $500,000.
"We've just taken one hit after another," Deputy Officer of Community Corrections Barbara Paladeni said during the budget discussion.
Sources of county revenue have some mixed effects from the recession.
Property taxes were reported about $300,000 higher than expected. Video lottery and the county clerk's office revenues, however, have both been reported lower.
In addition, Lewis said Yamhill County's gas tax revenue has been about 10 percent lower than the Oregon State Legislature projected, and if it doesn't improve, changes to the budget may have to occur.

Wow, no need to call names string. Why don't you quit your damn sniveling and pay your taxes like the rest of us. Or you could buy a whole lot of guns and ammo and start your own revolution against the government of tyranny, you poor man.

fleabath,do you understand that every penny you are talking about is our money,we worked for it,and they take it from us,like property taxes yeah they had more because we paid more last year at least I did,and the grant money also came from us,they don't get it out of a private vault.and gas revenue was down because gas was so gouged out of us last year that my pockets still hurt. The money starts with us they take it and mismanage it and then whine that they need more, cut 2/3 of government employees and this state would be in great shape. And most of all get the budgetory checkbook in order if you don't need it don't buy it

Strings, Did you read about the unanticipated federal grant money, higher than expected property taxes and overestimation of cuts? That's what they mean by found. It's a good thing to find the extra monies for our county budget, not an exscuse to sling poop.
