O’Brien appointed cancer liaison doctor,br>
The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons recently announced that Dr. Catherine O’Brien, a hematologist and medical oncologist at the Cancer Center at the Willamette Valley Medical Center, has received a three-year appointment as cancer liaison physician.

O’Brien is among a national network of more than 1,600 volunteer physicians providing leadership and direction in establishing, maintaining and supporting accredited cancer programs. She has served on the local cancer center staff for two years now.

According to the commission, cancer liaison physicians are integral in assisting the more than 1.3 million Americans diagnosed with cancer each year. In that role, O’Brien will spearhead commission initiatives with The Cancer Center, collaborate with local agencies like the Willamette Valley Cancer Foundation, and facilitate quality improvement initiatives based on data from the commission’s National Cancer Database.

The Commission on Cancer, based in Chicago, is a consortium of 42 professional organizations dedicated to improving the survival and quality of life for cancer patients.

Integra charity event benefits foundation

For the sixth consecutive year, employees of Integra Telecom recently hosted a golf tournament to benefit the Providence Newberg Health Foundation’s Hope for Children Fund.

Held at The Reserve Vineyards & Golf Club in Aloha, this year’s event filled both courses, attracting 288 golfers while raising $136,000 for kids with special needs. It has raised more than $450,000 for the foundation since its inception in 2003.

The Providence Newberg Medical Center serves more than 160 children with a variety of diagnoses, including cerebral palsy, autism, feeding disorders, genetic disorders and communication or language problems. Many of these families fall through the cracks, not qualifying for Medicaid, yet not being able to afford the necessary outpatient visits.

The Hope for Children Fund ensures that children with special needs and their families receive the rehabilitation therapy services they need to prepare them for what they encounter in their daily lives.

The fund also helps sustain Family Friends, a unique community outreach program that pairs 55 and older adults with children with special needs. The intent of this program is to provide a “family friend” to a child in need and provide much needed respite — an hour or two a week — to that child’s parent or guardian.

Country manager receives award

Tim Harris of McMinnville recently received the Gold International Management Award for excellence in management from GAMA International, a professional organization in the financial services industry.

Harris manages Country Financial Agency’s West Portland office, located at 1500 N.W. Bethany Blvd., Suite 190, Beaverton. The phone number is 503-924-1450.

To earn the award, agency managers have to offer superior sales and service to clients and excel in the leadership, recruitment and encouragement of professional growth and development of agents in their offices.
